Boat Insurance in Hollywood: Navigating Summer Waters Safely

Boat Insurance in Hollywood

Hollywood, Florida, with its stunning coastline, interconnected waterways, and proximity to the vast Atlantic Ocean, is a boater’s paradise. As summer arrives, residents and visitors alike eagerly take to the water, enjoying the sunshine and the unique lifestyle that comes with it. However, with increased boating activity comes increased risk. Understanding the essential aspects of boat insurance and practicing safe boating habits is crucial for protecting yourself, your vessel, and others while navigating Hollywood’s beautiful but potentially hazardous waters.

Understanding Boat Insurance Coverage

Just like auto insurance, boat insurance provides crucial protection for your watercraft and your financial well-being. It’s not just about covering damage to your boat; it’s about safeguarding yourself from liability in case of accidents or injuries. Here’s a breakdown of the key coverage types:

  • Liability Coverage: This is the most crucial aspect of boat insurance. It protects you if you’re held liable for injuries or property damage caused to others in a boating accident. This coverage can help cover medical expenses, legal fees, and settlement costs. Given the potential for accidents on crowded waterways, having adequate liability coverage is paramount.
  • Physical Damage Coverage: This covers damage to your boat itself, including damage from collisions, storms, theft, and vandalism. The level of coverage can vary, with options ranging from actual cash value (ACV) to agreed value coverage. ACV pays the depreciated value of your boat, while agreed value covers the boat’s value as determined by you and the insurer.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Boater Coverage: Similar to uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in auto insurance, this protects you if you’re involved in an accident with a boater who doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough coverage.
  • Medical Payments Coverage: This covers medical expenses for you and your passengers if you’re injured in a boating accident, regardless of who is at fault.
  • Towing and Assistance Coverage: If your boat breaks down or runs aground, this coverage helps cover the costs of towing and on-water assistance.
  • Personal Property Coverage: This covers personal belongings on your boat, such as fishing gear, electronics, and water sports equipment.

Potential Risks on Hollywood’s Waterways

Hollywood’s waterways, while beautiful, present unique risks that boaters must be aware of:

  • Crowded Waterways: During the summer months, the Intracoastal Waterway and surrounding areas can become heavily congested with boat traffic, increasing the risk of collisions.
  • Shallow Waters and Sandbars: Hollywood’s waterways have numerous shallow areas and sandbars, which can pose a risk of grounding, especially for inexperienced boaters.
  • Sudden Storms: Florida’s summer weather is known for sudden thunderstorms and squalls, which can create hazardous boating conditions.
  • Strong Currents and Tides: Tidal changes and strong currents can make navigation challenging, especially near inlets and bridges.
  • Marine Debris: Floating debris, such as logs and plastic, can pose a risk of damage to your boat’s hull and propeller.

Safe Boating Tips for Hollywood’s Summer Season

  • Take a Boating Safety Course: Even experienced boaters can benefit from a refresher course on safe boating practices.
  • Check the Weather Forecast: Before heading out, check the weather forecast for any potential storms or hazardous conditions.
  • File a Float Plan: Let someone know your intended route and expected return time.
  • Wear Life Jackets: Ensure everyone on board wears a properly fitted life jacket, especially children.
  • Maintain a Safe Speed: Observe speed limits and maintain a safe speed, especially in crowded areas.
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay attention to other boats, swimmers, and obstacles.
  • Avoid Alcohol and Drugs: Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Carry Safety Equipment: Ensure you have all required safety equipment on board, including a fire extinguisher, flares, and a first-aid kit.
  • Learn Local Waterway Rules: Familiarize yourself with local waterway rules and regulations.
  • Regular Boat Maintenance: Ensure your boat is properly maintained and in good working order.

John Finney President
Finney Insurance Corporation was founded in 2009 by John Finney in order to purchase Stirling Insurance Services Davie location. After being the Sales Manager for Ken Finney State Farm for eight years, John Finney purchased Stirling Insurance Services which had been in business for over 20 years. He knew that he wanted to be an independent agent due to the fact of the diversity of products and companies to help people, and because his potential was not limited. In short, John and his staff were tired of telling people “Sorry I can not help you”. Ken Finney’s office was closed in 2010 after 34 years of serving the community’s insurance needs due to State Farm stating they were pulling out of the state for homeowners insurance. Finney Insurance Corporation moved into Ken’s old location and hired most of his employees. It was a very difficult task to undertake without having all of the State Farm business, as it was given to other State Farm agents. Today that struggle and decision has paid off. Finney Insurance Corporation now has been growing at an incredible rate because of its diversity in an ever changing marketplace and its neighborhood agency feel for its clients. All of Finney Insurance’s staff are experienced professionals some with over 25 years in the industry. They care about the companies they represent and their customers. We are also proud members of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Latin American Association of Insurance Agencies. The Finney family has been involved in the community for 34 years and plan to continue to support the community with our agency. We also want to increase our services to our clients through technology and knowledge of new insurance concepts. Once we have fully realized our potential in our current location we would like to expand to other locations in Florida through acquisitions. Our marketing, referrals, cross sales, and bond with clients is our real strength and source of increased business to date and will continue in the future. We feel by aligning ourselves with quality companies we can be successful in a mutually beneficial relationship and provide the highest quality and selection for our customers to help them with all of their insurance needs; instead saying, “Yes, we can help you with that!”
